In the Netherlands, 55% of patients with a hip fracture are admitted to geriatric rehabilitation (GR) after surgery. GR is provided in specialized nursing homes by a team of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, and nutritionists under the supervision of an elderly care physician specialized in geriatric rehabilitation. Together with this multidisciplinary team, the patient sets goals for rehabilitation.
Our research focuses on geriatric patients with a hip fracture who are in a rehabilitation process. The aim of our observational study is to gain more insight into the prognostic factors that influence the rehabilitation of patients with a hip fracture. This insight can contribute to the development of a care program for rehabilitation of elderly people with a hip fracture.
This research consists of both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Patients with a hip fracture who are admitted to HMC hospital are asked to participate. Follow-up data are collected six weeks, three months, and twelve months after hip surgery at the outpatient clinic or during a home visit. The data collection includes patient characteristics, comorbidity, functionality, cognition, quality of life, sarcopenia, healthcare use and psychological measurements related to coping.
