The ELEVATE project (Epilepsy detection in dementia using innovative monitoring technology to improve quality of life) consists of several sub-studies focusing on epilepsy in elderly care, specifically in people with dementia. We investigate how common epilepsy is among people with dementia and how healthcare professionals and family caregivers currently manage this. In addition, we examine the impact of epileptic seizures on the quality of life of people with dementia and their family caregivers. We also explore how technology may help detect seizures at an earlier stage and what people consider important when using such technology. The development of education (materials) on the topic of dementia and epilepsy for family caregivers and healthcare professionals, as well as the development of an implementation plan, will also be a part of this study.
What will we do?
- First, we will conduct a questionnaire study with people with dementia, people with epilepsy, family caregivers and healthcare professionals to explore if, and what, types of seizure detection technology is currently used, and to examine the perceived impact of epilepsy on quality of life and care burden.
- Next, we will organize focus group discussions with people with dementia, people with epilepsy, family caregivers, and healthcare professionals to discuss experiences, wishes and needs, and preferences on several seizure detection technologies.
